What you need to know about the role
This is a unique opportunity to steer the future environmental and sustainability direction of a leading steel manufacturer. The role is required to govern the Company’s environmental performance at its integrated iron and steelworks, downstream processing facilities and distribution network. Heading up a central function of environment specialists, you will ensure that environment is fully embedded within the Company’s business systems to minimise risk and respond to opportunities.
You will benchmark environmental performance against best in class in order to shape the future strategic direction of the Company’s sustainability agenda. Working with manufacturing, engineering, R&D and other central functions you will direct environmental technology strategies to deliver Best Available Techniques and future innovation to minimise our use of natural resources, prevent waste and reduce pollution.
You will engage collaboratively with Central Government, regulators, customers and suppliers to drive environmental improvements in line with the future direction of the business. Working with sector associations you will seek to inform the emerging legislative landscape post Brexit to ensure a sustainable UK steel industry.

What we need to know about you
You will be educated to degree level within a science based subject, with 10 years of experience in environmental management preferably within a manufacturing sector. Equal weighting will be given to candidates with extensive relevant experience over qualifications. Professional membership of IEMA, ideally full and Chartered Environmentalist, would be desirable.
We are looking for someone with a detailed working knowledge of UK and European environmental legislation; and of governing environmental management systems within a manufacturing sector, preferably metals. You will have a high level of technical competence in the areas of air, effluent, waste management and climate change; with experience of working with regulatory authorities and external stakeholders. An awareness of the Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations would be beneficial.
You will be capable of influencing and informing both external and internal stakeholders at all levels. You must have a passion for identifying and driving schemes to deliver continuous improvements for the benefit of the Company, its employees and customers.
You should be someone with experience of working within a large and complex manufacturing operation. The ability to work to highly demanding deadlines is a prerequisite along with excellent communication skills.
