Planning for growth and development in Tower Hamlets

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Officer

PO4-5 £39,855 - £45,438 plus payment of a zone 1 to 2 travel card

Ref PLA00166

Tower Hamlets is an exciting and high profile location which includes the Tower of London World Heritage Site, Shoreditch, Brick Lane, Canary Wharf and the Olympic legacy. It’s one of London’s most diverse boroughs and has the highest targets for new homes and jobs in the capital, plus numerous EIA development projects.  With over fifty conservation areas, hundreds of listed buildings, an extensive river frontage including Tower Bridge - you will not find a more interesting place to develop your career.

Tower Hamlets is one of the few Council’s to employ a dedicated EIA officer and this is a unique opportunity for an experienced EIA professional to join our busy planning service. The role includes preparing screening and scoping opinions, scrutinising Environmental Statements, securing mitigation measures, and working closely with planning officers on EIA developments.  This role will play a key part in managing and delivering sustainable growth and regeneration in Tower Hamlets.

The successful candidate will need to have a detailed understanding of The Town and Country Planning (Environmental Impact Assessment) Regulations 2017, with specific knowledge of the local planning authority’s roles and responsibilities, particularly in light of the recent regulatory changes.

You will be the key point of contact on EIA matters within the Council, and as such will need to be confident working independently to resolve complex environmental issues, and liaising with a wide range of stakeholders, including the Council’s EIA consultants, developers and their consultants, planning officers, Members, statutory consultees and the general public.

You will also be responsible for managing the five year EIA Review Contract with our consultants, Temple Group and LUC. The value of this contract is up to £2.5 million over 5 years, and as such good time and budget management skills would be advantageous.

An eye for detail and ability to make robust decisions are essential qualities of any successful candidate.

The Council offers competitive pay and conditions, with generous annual leave, flexible working, staff benefits, a modern workplace, travel allowance and a supportive environment including training opportunities to develop a career in management and leadership.

For an informal discussion about this role, please contact Harriet Peacock, on 0207 364 5009.
