Sustainability Manager

Band B3: £41,165 - £49,776 (plus a London Weighting allowance of £4,052 if applicable)

Bootle/Cheltenham/London

Guide ONR to a greener future.

The challenge

Often in the public eye, the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is an evolving public corporation. Essentially, we’re responsible for shaping and delivering the regulation of nuclear safety and security across the UK. As our Sustainability Manager, you’ll make sure that ONR treads lightly on the planet, using your expertise to the full. Take the lead, make change happen and shape a newly created role.

The role

From minimising our energy consumption to making green procurement decisions, ONR has a responsibility to reduce its impact on the environment. A public corporation, we’re determined to fulfil our Environmental Statement of Intent and the Greening Government Commitments (GGCs).

For you, it’s a chance to take the lead on all kinds of initiatives and work with colleagues ONR-wide. A subject matter expert, you’ll report to senior managers and direct internal policy decisions.  You’ll also raise awareness of sustainability, ensure legal compliance and develop our sustainability agenda. If you want to shape a brand new role around your aims and objectives, this is your opportunity.

The person

At this level, you’ll need the credibility to deal with ONR’s leaders and drive environmental change. You’ll therefore need a sound understanding of public sector environmental and sustainability legislation, as well as the UK’s sustainability and climate change agenda. Your knowledge should be based on a relevant postgraduate degree and professional membership of a chartered institute or professional body. If you’ve also completed a CQI/IRCA Certified internal auditor course, so much the better. Your expertise must come with good organisation, motivation and a gift for clear communication. It’s vital that you have the energy and people skills to drive change, win support and influence at the highest levels.

Like all our roles, this one offers flexible, hybrid working. However, you will need to visit the office regularly.

The rewards

We offer competitive salaries at the ONR, with this role attracting a salary of £41,165 - £49,776  (plus a London Weighting allowance of £4,052). Furthermore, you’ll be eligible for a substantial Civil Service Pension scheme (including ill-health retirement and lump sum family benefits). Plus, you’ll receive a generous holiday entitlement.

About us

ONR is a Public Corporation with a mission to provide efficient and effective regulation of the nuclear industry, holding it to account on behalf of the public. Our staff are drawn from a wide range of professional backgrounds with specialist inspectors to deliver our core business including civil engineering, radiological protection, human factors, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and nuclear physics. And together they’re involved in everything from assessing safety cases, inspecting nuclear sites, communicating our decisions, training new recruits and representing the UK and ONR within the wider international nuclear community.
