We have an exciting opportunity for a Sustainability Manager to join our European team to support the projects in our Development business. This role will suit someone that wants to inspire, challenge, guide and help us to deliver our sector-leading sustainability targets. After a year of increasing climate awareness which culminated in the UK and Italy’s co-hosting of the international COP26 climate conference, we are offering a unique opportunity to work with Lendlease to help us to lead the industry transformation required.

The Sustainability Manager, Urban Regeneration, will act as a subject matter expert, supporting, inspiring and educating business teams to achieve our highly ambitious targets, positioning the business as a global leader in sustainability. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the establishment and implementation of a strong, commercially robust sustainability approach across Lendlease’s major urban regeneration projects.

The role will be accountable for:

  • Leading the development and delivery of sustainability strategies for major urban regeneration projects that align with the Group Sustainability Framework, increase profitability and enhance Lendlease’s brand and reputation.
  • Develop strategies for projects and business units to achieve our ambitious sustainability targets, notably to be a 1.5C-aligned company, achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2025 and Absolute Zero Carbon by 2040.
  • Ensure projects maintain their compliance with Lendlease Europe’s Sustainability Minimum Standards to ensure a high standard of sustainability performance across the board. 
  • Working alongside specialist sustainability consultants on projects to ensure that targets are progressed and tracked accordingly.
  • Providing long-term vision and thought leadership which challenges conventional practice, responds to the Lendlease identified megatrends and positions the business as a global leader in sustainability.
  • Anticipating, identifying and addressing key sustainability-related business opportunities and risks, including legislation, industry trends and funding etc. Where possible seek out creative financing, funding and/or grant opportunities to support sustainability innovation across projects.
  • Creating competitive advantages and market differentiation for the business; working with the Development Managers and marketing and communications teams to ensure the strategy, its aims and outcomes are communicated in a simple, customer-friendly fashion and demonstrate sustainability value for key external stakeholders.
  • Managing the timely reporting of sustainability performance for projects through internal governance gateways.
  • Managing and completing relevant external benchmarks or indices (incl. GRESB, Next Generation), and investor surveys and requests.
  • Consolidates, monitors and reports sustainability performance to the business, Group and investors; using information gathered to develop and implement strategies to enhance performance.
  • Communicating and collaborating across LL business lines to leverage expertise, share knowledge and create economies of scale.
  • Setting annual sustainability budgets and helping to identify opportunities to improve and demonstrate return on investment of sustainability spend - appointing specialist sustainability advisors as required.
  • Partnering with like-minded organisations and government agencies at a local and national level to advocate policies and standards to support Lendlease’s sustainability work as required.
  • Preparing and implementing Sustainability Business Plans for the business, engaging with the MD, leadership teams and Managing Director of Sustainability and Social Impact, Europe. Ensure these plans are commercially grounded and reflected in business plans / financial modelling as required.
  • Providing leadership to sustainability resources in the business as appropriate – including embedded resources with responsibility for helping to deliver sustainability objectives: helping to set goals, develop professional development plans, assess training needs, provide coaching and mentoring and ensure collaboration and knowledge sharing.
  • Establishing and maintaining good working relationships with all key interfaces, leveraging them to deliver commercial opportunities and/or access to funding and capital.
  • Ensure the role of the sustainability function is clear within the business and provide ongoing engagement support to ensure that sustainability is embedded in Development processes and culture.


Skills, knowledge & experience required

  • Minimum of 5-10 years demonstrated sustainability experience.
  • Knowledge of property finance, responsible property investment, project management, carbon and climate resilience, sustainability implementation, stakeholder management, communication/marketing/sales, place-making, design and development and planning preferred.
  • Strong commercial acumen including the ability to manage costs, forecasting and provisioning.
  • Ability to manage a complex programme of work and collaborate across the team to deliver this in the most efficient way possible.
  • Be sufficiently knowledgeable across technical sustainability concepts to drive outcomes for the business.
  • Passionate about environmental, social and economic sustainability
  • Ability to provide leadership.
  • Ability to work within and manage a multi-stakeholder, matrix structure environment.
  • Disciplined in planning and monitoring incl. creating and maintaining control tools and systems.
  • Transparent communication of business and project issues between project/business leaders and the wider Lendlease management team.
  • Strong focus on value creation but this must be balanced with a passion for innovation, sustainability and creating desirable built form outcomes for our customers.
  • Demonstrates a collaborative approach to decision making.
  • Resilient to setbacks and working in an ambiguous environment.
