The Department

This is a new role for Weightmans. The successful candidate will work closely with the Board and the Operations Board to lead on Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) embedding ESG into the core strategy and purpose of the firm.

Location is flexible and we will accept applications from all regions.

The role holder will need to work independently and ensure that they can bring together the work that is already underway across the Firm in Environment, CSR, D&I, H&S and Governance.  The aim is to work with the Board to agree the Agenda for Weightmans and work with the Operations Board to agree a Delivery Plan to support our agenda and the Metrics to measure our success.  The role holder will be a member of the Operations Board and will also be expected to attend main Board meetings as required to facilitate the development of the approach and to report on the progress of the Plan.

The role

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • To ensure that ESG is baked into the Firm’s Purpose, Strategy, Target Operating Model and Values.
  • To define the current activity that is underway within the Firm across Environment, CSR, D&I, H&S and Governance through engaging with the role holders who lead these activities.
  • To use the work above to identify the gaps in which work may need to be undertaken.
  • To define and agree with the Board the short and medium term focus of activities and the key milestones that will measure our success.
  • To ensure that our approach is cohesive and consistent and is aligned with our Target Operating Model.
  • To work closely with teams and people across Weightmans eg Facilities, HR, Marketing, CSR, and ROHs to ensure there is an understanding of the ESG Plan and to agree the approach for updating on activities and reporting metrics .
  • To work with the Board on an approach to stakeholder engagement across the Firm and the approach to communications with different stakeholder groups.
  • Promote and raise awareness, at all levels of the Firm, of ESG so all staff understand how a shared approach to Sustainable Values can help the Firm with new opportunities.
  • To agree a set of reporting metrices to show progress against our Plan and these metrics are  in line with external best practice.
  • To ensure that the right governance framework is in place to enable effective decision making and translate policy into action.
  • To support relevant teams to help clients in developing and implementing frameworks that enables them to transition to a more sustainable business.
  • To provide subject matter expertise and operational advice to Client Relationship Partners to deal with client request.
  • To ensure that we have a Weightmans approach that can be included in Tender documents.
  • To review the governance of ESG within our supply chain.   
  • To coordinate the production of any annual reporting.   
  • Prepare and deliver training on legislation and guidance updates.

The person specification

  • A commercial approach and an understanding of ESG Frameworks.   
  • A knowledge of working in related areas and a real passion and interest to establish an approach within the Firm for ESG.  
  • It would be desirable to have an understanding of the legal sector.
  • An understanding of the regulatory landscape within ESG.
  • An ability to quickly understand how the Firm works and to ensure that you can engage and build relationships across the Firm.
  • An understanding of client relationships and an ability to work alongside Client Partners to support them in developing a client proposition.   
  • An understanding of data management and analysis.
  • A collaborative approach to working across teams and to be able to influence teams.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability work with and influence at a senior level.  
  • A change agent who can transform behaviours.
  • An innovative approach and the ability to demonstrate how the Firm can grow in a sustainable way.
  • Ability to work in an independent way. 
  • Degree level of education.
  • Project management experience.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
