Environmental Health Officer – Housing Standards
A client of mine in Redcar is looking for an Environmental Health Officer to join their team for a period of 12 months to be responsible for the implementation of private sector housing policies and liaise with the Housing Service Manager and Housing Standards Team Leader on the development of new policies and interpretation of statutes to accommodate new duties placed through legislation.
To respond to and deal with complaints, requests for service and enquiries received by the section efficiently and respond to emergencies both within and outside normal working hours as required. To provide relevant advice and assistance about the Section’s services and offer service users other options for further specialist assistance available and supervise and monitor the workload of technical and clerical staff within the Section.
To examine and prepare reports, attend Committee or other meetings as required and where necessary recommend conditions in respect of plans submitted for Building Regulation approval, Planning Permission and other environmental health responsibilities while keeping abreast of all new legislation, developments and statutory functions in connection with the specialist section and to participate in the development and implementation of the Private Sector Housing Strategies and more specialist projects.
To assist in the delivery of housing renewal and private sector housing related programmes within the borough and provide professional, technical and practical advice, guidance and training to technical staff, student Environmental Health Officers and other Officers in connection with the duties of the Team.
Collection of evidence in accordance with the Police and Criminal Evidence Act and the preparation of necessary statements of evidence and reports and the giving of evidence in Court, Public Inquiry, Tribunal etc in the course of instigating legal proceedings.
Evaluate evidence to support offences under the relevant legislation and in appropriate cases recommend and instigate legal proceedings.
Contribute to the development of the Department’s Service Plan and ensuring that the objectives set out in the plan are achieved with effective monitoring and evaluation.
- Experience of working in an enforcement role including gathering evidence in accordance with the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Current UK driving license;
- Good written and verbal communication skills;
- Computer literate;
- Highly Developed Interpersonal Skills
EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS/ KNOWLEDGE
- Certificate of registration from the Environmental Health Registration Board (EHRB);
- BSc Hons. in Environmental Health or Diploma in Environmental Health or MSc Environmental Health/Environmental Science
- Knowledge of housing legislation.
- Knowledge of statutory nuisance and enforcement procedures.
- Knowledge of building construction.
